7th April, 1973: Our‘Hon. Secretary, Dr.’S G. Vdidya had an audienée with 1h President of India. Shri V. V. Giri on the occasion of his vist to Goa His Exceliency offered all support towards th: noble cause for which the Society is serving.
8th April, 1973: The actual construction work of the Hospital was started on this date, when Lt. Governor Shri S. K. Banerjee laid th: Corner stone of the proposed Hospital building. Late Chief Minister, D. B. Bandedkar presided over the function.
13th May, 1973: Jointly with Indian Medical Asscciation, the Goa Cancer Society organised a Mid Term Medical Conference on Cancer at the Pathology Amphitheatre, Goa Medical College, Panaji. Eminent Cancer Specialists from ali over the country participated. A small Cancer Exhibition and screening of films was held on the occasion.
7th August, 1973: Tree planting around the Hospital site was done in the first week of August during ‘Vanmahotsava’ and the late Chief Minister. D. B. Bandodkar enthusiastically participated in th: evant.
12th August, 1973: Our first founder Chairman, Shri D. B. Bandodkar unexpzctedly left us for his heavenly abode on 12th August, 1973. Smt. Shashi kalaG. Kakodkar, the Cheif Minister of Goa, Daman and Diu was unanimously elected President of the Goa Cancer Society on 14th August, 1973.
21st August, 1973: The Goa Cancer Society’s education program through films on “Cancer education was commenced, the first film show being held at Aldona Institute.
17th September, 1973: The Goa Cancer Society lost yet another stalwart and founder Vice-President, Shri Shantilal Khushaldas who was one of the pioneers of the Goa Cancer Society with his donation of Rs. 1,50,000/-.
1974
February, 1974: The Goa Cancer Soziety started its Monthly News Bulletin, An entirely self-financing project, funded by advertisements and subscri- ptions, this Bullstin repressnts a two way channzi between the Members and Society. Iris enthusiastically recived by members and public at large.
28th May, 1974: Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon. S:cretary and thz moving spirit behind the Goa Cancer Society attended ths first International Congress on Public Education about Cancer at Monaco. The Hon. Secretary was the only delegate from India present at the conference, the others “being from 35 countries, including U.SA., U.K, Australia, France and Switzerland.
13th June, 1974: The Hon. Secretary organised 4. fund _coliection programme in the U. K., and succeeded in bringing back significant contrioution in foreign exchange for ths Goa Cancer Society. A Fund Raising Committee was formed i in ‘London.
September; 1974: Mr. K. A. Varugis, Managing Director, Zuari Agro Chemical donated the sum of Rs, 2,10,000/- on behalf of his Organisation to the Goa Cancer Society.
4th October, 1974: The Society started its Ore Day’s Salary drive.
1975
4th January, 1975: Rt. Rev. John Gordon, the Apostolic Pronuncio in India and Titular Archbishop of Nicopolis & Nestum, visited the construction site of the Cancer Hospital at Dona Paula, accompained by Bishop Raui Gonsalves.
2nd & 3rd April 1975: A delegation led by Mr. V.V. Dempo, Vice-President; Mr, Bapalal Gosalia, Vice-Presidedt; Mr. Y D. Chowgule, Member and Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon. Secretary visited New Delhi and called on Mr. C. Subramaniam, Hon’ble Minister of Finance; Dr. Karan Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Health; Dr. M. Thangavelu, Head of the Non-Communicable Disease Section, World Health Organisation; Chairman’ of Board of Direct Taxes; Director General of Health; and Executive Director, Caritas India.
16th May, 1975: A Research Wing was added to the activities of the Goa Cancer Society and was placed under the guidance of Dr. Emidio Afonso.
12th August 1975: The Leo Club of Panaji launched the Project “Every House a Fiver” for the Goa Cancer Society. Minister for law, Mr. pratapsingh rane was the Chief Guest. The first edition of the Goa Cancer Society’snBulletin in Marathi was released on the occasion.
20th August, 1975: Shri R. J. Majithia, Chairman, Mormugao Port Trust donated the sum of Rs. 1,46,000/~ on behalf of the Board” of Trustees of the Port of Mormugao, towards the capital cost of 2 beds at the Cancer Hospital.
21st September, 1975: The Bombay Sub Office of the Goa Cancer Society was launched at Mahim, Bombay. Chief Minister Smt. Shashikala G. Kakodkar presided over the function. Dr. J. Leon D’Souza, Minister of State for Health, Maharashtra was the Chief Guest. Vice-President V. V. Dempo, Hon. Secretary, Dr. S. G. Vaidya and Dr. Arthur E. D’Sa also addressed the gathering of over 500 people.
18th Octcber, 1975: Through the kind courtesy of Gosalia family, Margao, the Goa Cancer Society organised the premiere film show ‘INSAAF’ at the air-conditioned Theatre Cine Vishant, graced by film star Tanuja.
1976
13th January, 1976: A five member delegation of the Goa Cancer Society met His Excellency, President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed at Cabo Raj Niwas, Panaji and briefed him on the work and progress of the Goa Cancer Society.
28th February, 1976: Dr. Karan Singh, Union Miniter of Health ‘and Family Planning visited the Cancer Hospital at Dona Paula.
4th March, 1976: Mr. C. E. Kamath, Chairman, Canara Bank visited the Hospital construction site at Dona Paula.
11th March, 1976: The first Volunteer Workshop of the Goa Cancer Society was held at the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Panaji.
28th March, 1976: A meeting of members and weil-wishers of the Goa Cancer Society was held at Sharadashram Hall, Dadar, Bombay under the Chairmanship of Dr. Arthur E. D’Sa. The Bombay Sub-committee was formed.
25th April, 1976: Dr. S.G. Vaidya, Hon. Secretary and Dr. R. V. P. Nachinolkar, Member on behalf of the Society, visited Hubli and had a meeting with the Board of Management of Karnataka Cancer Therapy and Research Unit, Hubli.
18th July, 1976: A public meeting of the members and well-wishers of the Goa Cancer Society was held at Gomantak Sivasangh, Ville Parle, Bombay, Advocate G.G. Kamat, Vice -Chairman of Bombey Sub-Committee presided.
7th & 8th August, 1976: The Goa Cancer Society convened the first All India Convention of Cancer Societies at Panaji, Goa at which it was unanimously decided to form the Federation of Cancer Societies in India is located in the office of the Goa Cancer Society, Panaji.
8th August,1976: A public meeting of members and well-wishers of the Goa Cancer Society was held at the Society of Piety Hall, Vijayawadi, Chira Bazaar, Bombay. Mr. K. K. Shah, former Union Mister of Health and former Governor of Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest at the meeting. Dr. Simon Fernandes a former Mayor of Bombay and Vice-Chairman, Bombay Sub-Committee, presided at the meeting.
22nd August, 1976: A public meeting of well-wishers and members of the Goa Cancer Society was held at St. Paul’s High School, Dadar, Bombay. Dr. Arthur E. D’Sa, Chairman, Bombay Sub-Committee presidad at the meeting. Dr. Vishnu Acharya, Hon. Surgeon of Bombay Hospital was the Guest Speaker.
3rd October, 1976: The Chairty film show. “FAKIRA”, in aid of the Goa Cancer Society, was held at Maratha Mandir, Bombay through kind courtesy of Producer/Director N. N. Sippy. The Maharashtra Minister of State for Civil Supplies, Mr. Jagesh Desai was the Chief Guest at the function which was attended by Artistes Shashi Kapoor, Aruna Irani and a host of others. Producer N. N. Sippy announced his donation of Rs. 10,000:00 to the Goa Cancer r Society.
30th October, 1976: A meeting of the Ad-hoc-:Cominittee of the Federation of Cancer Sacieties in India was held at Coomaraswamy Hall, Bombay confirming the Articles of Association, Rules and Regulations and Election of Office Bearers of the first Council and Executive. Committee of the Federation of Cancer Societies in India.
1977
7th January, 1977: Smt. Shashikala G. Kakodkar, Chief Minister, Goa, Daman & Diu and President of the Goa Cancer Society celebrating her 41st Birthday made a special gift of Rs. 1,000/- to the Goa Cancer Society,
15th January, 1977: The Hon. Secretary, Dr. S. G. Vaidya was invited to Delhi by our Patron Member, Shashi Kapoor to meet his fellow film stars at the Film Festival.
5th February, 1977: Mr. Sushil Kumar Shinde, Maharashtra Minister of State for Social Welfare visited the Cancer Hospital. ;
9th February, 1977: The President of India on behalf of the Government of India sanctioned a grant in aid of Rs. 5 lakhs for the installation of a Cobalt Therapy Unit at the Cancer Hospital, Dona Paula, Goa.
10th February, 1977: The Abu Dhabi Goans, under the leadership of Mr. R. A. Mendonca, organised a Konkani Drama “Bahrainkar” in aid of the Goa Cancer Society. They raised a sum of Rs. 56,785.00, which was ceremoniously received by Rt. Rev. Bishop Raul Gonsalves on the behalf of the Goa Cancer Society on 27th March, 1977.
24th February, 1977: Dr. Luis Gaspar D’Silva, Portuguese Ambassador to India, visited the Cancer Hospital at Dona Paula. His Excellency was accompanied by Mrs. D’Silva and Mr. Lucas Campos, Attache and Vice-Consul for Portugal. Dr. D’Silva promised to consider exchange of personnel for specialised Training in Cancer.
27th March, 1977: The Second Voluntary Workshop Clinic was held at the Cancer Hospital, Dona Paula.
22nd May, 1977: Inauguration of the Goa Cancer Society’s Hospital at Dona Paula, by ” Shri S. K. Banerjee, Lt. Governor of Goa, Daman & Diu. Smt. Shashikala Kakodkar, Chief Minister, Goa. Daman & Diu presided over the function.
3rd July, 1977: The ambitious Cancer Control Project of ths Goa Cancer Society was launched by Rev. Fr. Gervasio Pinto, Superior General, Pilar.
16th July, 1977: Mr. H. C. Bhambhani, General Manager, State Bank of India, Bombay, visited the Hospital.
13th- 15th August, 1977: A three day motivational programms for volunteers was held at the Cancer Hospital, Dona Paula, under the guidance of Prof. M. S. Nadkarni, Director of the National Institute of Motivational and Institutional Development, Bombay.
19th August 1977: Shri Ram Joshi, Vice-Chancellor, Bombay University, visited the Cancer Hospital, Dona Paula and was impressed with the foresightedness of the Gean Community in the growth of this magnificent institution.
20th and 21st August, 1977: The Hon. Secretary, Dr. S G. Vaidya, and Treasurer, Mr. V. Azrenkar
visited Kolhapur to address the Rotary Club of Kolhapur and Indian Medical Association, Kolhapur, on the activities of the Goa Cancer Society.
27th August, 1977: The first Refresher Course (Professional educational programinc) of the Goa Cancer Society for General Practitioners, on their role on early detection and management of Cancer was held at the Cancer Hospital, Dona Paula,
25th September, 1977 : The Hon. Szcretary, Dr. S. G. Vaidya, and Joint Secretary, Dr. S. B. Shetye, gave a talk at a public meeting at the small Savings Auditorium in K.S.G.EA, Karwar, on the progress and activities of ‘the Society. Dr. A. R. M. Iqbal Ahmed, I.A.S, Deputy Commissioner preside d over the meeting.
4th Octobet, 1977: The Goa, Cancer Society was approved as a Research Institute by the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi and granted exemption from Income Tax under Clause (ii) of Sub Section (I) of section 35 of the Income Tax Act of 1961. The new Income Tax Notification provides 100% deduction in respect of donations made to the Goa Cancer Society.
6th & 8th October, 1977: The Hon. Secreaty, Dr.S.G. Vaidya visited New Delhi and discussed Goa Cancer Society Research projects with the World Health Organisation. Commenced negotiation for callaborate studies witj International Agency for Research on Cancer.
23rd October, 1977: The Cobalt Unit generously donated by the Government of India was formally inaugurated by our Patron Mamber, the matinee idol film star Shashi Kapoor. Shri Shashi Kapoor donated an amount of Rs. 1 Lakh in memory of his late parents and the Society conferred on him the honour of Madame Marie Curie Fellow of the Goa Cancer Society.
5th November, 1977: Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon. Secretary of the Goa Cancer Society, visited Kawait at the invitation of the Goan Arts Circle who had organised a programm of events in aid of the Goa Cancer Society. Audiences and interviews were also held with His Excellency, Dr. Abdul Rahman

1978
17th January, 1578: Mr. G. Gavai, Director General (Shipping) and Chairman, Seafarers Welfare Fund Society, Bombay donated the sum of Rs. 1 Lakh to the Goa Cancer Society towards the capital cost of reservation of one bed for Seafarers at the Cancer Hospital.
The Hon. Secretary, Dr. S. G. Vaidya had an audience withi His Excellency, Faisal Essa Yousuf, Consul General for the State of Kuwait in Bombay to apprise him on the progress of his talks in Kuwait.
21st January 1978: A meeting of volunteers of the Goa Cancer Society was held at Panaji Goa, to discuss the fund raising strategy and programm for 1978. About 5,000 volunteer hours were spontaneously donated at this meeting for the success of 1978.
3rd February, 1978: Mr. L. K. Advani, Union Mnister of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, visited the Cancer Hospital at Dona Paula, Goa and was impressed with the remarkable success in involving the community in this noble endeavour.
5th February, 1978: A get together of volunteers and members of the Goa Cancer Society was held at ithe Garware Club Hall, Wankhede Stadium, Bombay. Those present at the meeting included our President, Smt. Shashikala Kakodkar; Mr. Murli Deora, Mayor of Bombay; Mr. Jagesh Desai, Maharashtra Minister of State for Finance and Transport; Dr. Arthur E. D’Sa, Chairman, Bombay Sub-Committee; Dr. Simon Fernandes. Vice Chairman, Bombay Sub-Committee; Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon. Secretary and about 125 valunteers, members and well-wishers of the Goa Cancer Society. At this meeting a fund raising panel was formed to operate under-the aegis of the Bombay Sub-Committee.
7th & 9th Febuary, 1978: Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon cretary, “Goa Cancer Soclety visited Bangalore at the invitation of the Karnataka Cancer Society during their Cancer Week to participate at the course on “continuing education on Oncology” and address the orientation workshop on the role. of volunteers for.non-medical workers in a Cancer Society.
6th April, 1978: St. Francis Goan Association, Quatar, under the leadership of Mr. Luis Fernandes, organised a Konkani drama in Doha in aid of the Goa Cancer Society. The function realised a profit of Rs. 16,995/- which was donated to the Goa Cancer Society.
28th April, 1978: Mr. M. V. Patvardban, Chairman, Bank of Maharashtra visited the Cancer Hospital! and wished it all success.
22nd May, 1978: It was the day of prayer and re-dedication on the occasion of the first Anniversary of the Cancer Hospital at Dona Paula. Visitors at the Hospital were Mr. Shankar Lad, Minister of Health, Goa, Daman & Diu; Mr. Bapalai Gosalia, Vice-President, Goa Cancer Society; Mr. Gurudatt Kakodkar; Dr. Inacio D’Sa, President, Panjim ‘Municipality’s Dr. M. M. Khemani, and several others.
10th June, 1978: At the invitation of Kolhapur Medical Association, Dz. S. G. Vaidya, Dr. D. Bhounsule and Mr. Venkatesh Angle of the Goa Cancer Society visited Kolhapur to participate in the Health Education Week, Dr. S. G. Vaidya addressed a Public Meeting on early detection of Cancer.
20th June, 1978: A meeting of Cancer Patients Welfare Services under the aegis of the Gpoa Cancer Society was held at Panaji, Goa to consider the care and rehabilitation of Cancer Patients. Dr. Justine Coelho was appointed Chairman and assisted by Mr. Laxmidas Borkar, Mrs. B. Z. Kasim, Mrs. E. Barbosa and Dr. N. B. Kamat Ghanekar who all volunteered to undertake specific assignments in the interest of the Cancer patients.
25th June, 1978: Dr. D. Bhounsule, Joint S:cretary, Goa Cancer Society addressed a meeting of medical practitioners of Sawantwadi, Kudal and Vengurla called the Doctors Fraternity Club on Prevention and Control of Cancer. Dr. V.V. Achavel presided and there wereabout 40 Doctors for the meeting.
28th June, 1978: iThe day marked the sad death of our Vice-Presdent and Trustee, Bapalal Gosalia who had been a member of the Managing Committee of the Goa Cancer Society from inception.
30th June, 1978: Dr. R. Shirodkar, Membzr/volunteer of the Goa Cancer Sociefy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and acting on bzhalf of the Gea Cancer Society met the Chief Executive of the GermanCancer Foundation. The subject of collaboration in research projects was discussed.
14th July, 1978: About 50 doctors participated at a meeting held at the Cancer Hospital, Dona Paula to discuss the Cancer Control Project of the Goa Cancer Society. They gave the program their wholehearted support and chalked out the details of the Health Camps to be conducted in rural areas.
16th August, 1978: Formation of the Goa Cancery Society Sub-Committee, Ahmedabad under the Chairmanship of Mr. J. J. Pereira for the purpose of raising funds for the Goa Cancer Society in Gujarat.
8th September, 1978: Mr. Nagindas H. Thakker was elected to fill the post of Vice-President of the Goa Cancer Socisty. Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon Secretary of the Goa Cancer Society was nominated Exscutive Director of the Cancer Hospital at Dona Paula.
23rd September, 1978: Mr. O.N. Sheopuri, Ambassador of India to Mozambique visited the Cancer Hospital and was pleased to witness such an elegant and noble institution in this part of the country.
30th September, 1978: The Hon. Secretary, Dr. S. G. Vaidya, visited Ahmedabad and had a meeting with the Gujarat Cancer Socizty and Gujarat Cancer and Re- search Institute.
1st October, 1978: The Goa Cancer Society Sub-Committee, Ahmcdabad presented a Konkani Drama ‘Last Judgement’ to a packed house at Jethalal Amartlal Auditorium, Ahmedabad, The Chief Guest at the function was the Mayor of Ahmedabad and Dr. S. G. Vaidya, Hon. Secretary.
