Annual Report: 2016 – 2017

1) Agreement with IMA Ponda Charitable Trust on 12 May, 2016.

The Members of Goa Cancer Society on 28th Aug 2015 visited the DILASA Site, Farmagudi, Ponda. Goa Cancer Society’s Vice-President Dr. Suresh Shetye, Secretary Dr. Damodar Bhounsule and Admin Officer Mrs. Sangeeta Chawan made the visit as decided in the Managing Committee Meeting on 16th June 2015.

After examining the site carefully two rooms were booked with attached toilets on the first floor. one room with 2 beds whereas other with 3 beds respectively. Each room worth Rs.5 lakhs so the Society agreed for Rs.10 lakhs for 2 rooms.

The Agreement between Goa Cancer Society and IMA Ponda Charitable Trust was signed on 12 May 2016.

2) The 3rd Annual Lecture of the Goa Cancer Society on 18th Oct 2016.

Third Annual Lecture of the Goa Cancer Society was organised on Tuesday, 18th 0ct 2016 at theAC Auditorium, Main Hall, Institute  Menezes Braganza, Panaji at 3.36 pm on the topic “Evolution of Cancer Treatment” by Prof (Dr)Jayant.S.Vaidya MBBS MS, DNB, FRCS, PhD, Professor of Surgery and Oncology at Royal Free Hospital, London and Professor at University College London, London.

The President of the Society Shri. Shrinivas Dempo escorted the guest to the dais and presented a flower bouquet to the guest. The dignitaries on the dais included Prof(Dr.)Jayant Vaidya, guest speaker, Shii Shrinivas Dempo, President of the Society, Dr.Suresh Shetye, Vice-President, Dr. Damodar Bhounsule Secretary and Dr. Shekhar Salkar,Jt.Secretary cf the Society. The programme was then inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries and other Managing Committee Members of the Society.

The President then gave a brief introduction of Dr.Jayant Vaidya The guest was then felicitated with a silver plaque by the President of the Society, Mr. Shrinivas Dempo. A collage of some old pictures of Dr. Sharad Vaidya were given to him as a token of love from the Society.

Welcome address was delivered by the President where he said that without Jayant Vaidya’s father the Society wouid not have come into existence as it was he who unified the movement and brought together likeminded people. He further added that, timely detection precautions and awareness has reduced cancer cases. Speaking about the Scciety’s works in reducing the number of cancer related deaths in the past 3 to 4 years the Society has conducted several workshops and training programs to educate the Goan people. The Society has even organised screening camps in rural areas and provide financial aid to the cancer patients to cope with their treatment expenditure. After the lecture their was a question answer session for the audience, many thoughtful questions came which were answered by Dr. Shekhar Salkar and Prof(Dr)Jayant Vaidya.

The lecture ended with a hearty vote of thanks by Dr. Shekhar Salkar.

3) World Cancer Day on 7th Feb 2017

“Worid cancer day” was organised on 7th Feb 2017 in association with Manipal Hospital in Goa. Dr. Suresh Shetye was the chief guest at the function. Manipal Hospital in association with Goa Cancer Society launched a cancer screening package on 7th March ’17.Special Screening package was released at the hands of Hemashri Gadekar, of Mahila Self Help Group, in presence of Dr.Suresh Shetye, Vice – President ,Goa Cancer – Society, Dr. Shekhar Salkar,Head of Oncology,Manipal Hospital, and other prominent doctors Manipal Hospital.

4) Cancer Screening Package

Cancer screening program was organised in association with Manipal Hospital, where 419 patients from different parts of Goa were screened from 7th Feb 2017 to 7t March 2017.

5) The Goa Cancer Society with Indian Medical Association

In association with Mardolkar Hospital, Bicholim organised the Cancer Detection Camp on Sunday, 26th Feb 2017 at’‘Mardolkar Hospital, Bicholim from 8.30 am to 1 pm.

The doctors team included Dr Shekhar Salkar – Hony. Jt. Secretary of Goa Cancer Society,Chief of Clinical Services at Manipal Hospitals Goa, Dr.Sandesh Chodankar(ENT Specialist), Associate professor ~ ENT at Goa Medicai College, Secretary of IMA,Bicholim, Dr. Laxmi Narayan  – Gynaecologist, Dr. Rajashree Marathe-Radiologist, Dr.Vitthol Mardolkar-General Physician, Dr. Guaresh Palav-Chest Physician, Manipal Hospital & Sangeeta Chawan representing The Goa Cancer Society.

During the camp the patients were registered, BP & Weight recorded, patient history taken and checked by General Physician and then referred for ENT and Gynaecological Consultations. Needy cases were referred for blood tests and ultrasound.

Total 36 patients registered out of which, 1 case has been identified as suspected cancer patient where further investigations would be carried out.

6) The GOA CANCER SOCIETY in association with IMA PONDA CHARITABLE TRUST and SHREE SHBARADA GRANTH PRASARAK SAUNSTHA

Organised a free Cancer Detection Camp recently at IMA House -Ponda and Kamat Hospital, 5th March 2017.

Dr. Ajay Pednekar – Vice – President of IMA Ponda Charitable Trust welcomed the dignitaries on the dias, Doctors and patients who attended the camp. The Camp was inaugurated by Shri. Gangaram Morajkar, Managing Committee Member of the Goa Cancer Society, Dr.Shekhar Salkar, Jt. Secretary of the GCS Clinical Head of Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula, Dr.Ajay Pednekar, Vice-Chairman of IMA Ponda Charitable Trust, Dr.Vallabh Dhaimodkar Secretary of IMA Ponda Charitable Trust, Dr. Kalpana Chodankar,-Secretary, IMA Goa State.

Dr. Shekar Salkar then gave a small talk on prevention of cancer, he said the lifestyle today is very much responsible for growing cancer case in Goa, he stressed on least usage of plastic in day today life. Women should get married by the age of 25 and have at least 2 kids. Career and health should be planned simultaneously to maintain a balance. He also threw some light on the cancer statistics of the state where he said that, Goa leads other states in Colon Cancer case whereas stands last in Cervical cancer case.

Dr Vaillabh Dhaimodkar gave a brief on what are the developments in the IMA Ponda DILASA Project. He also stressed on the vital contribution and support of Goa Cancer Society towards various  programs of IMA Ponda Dilasa project.

The Doctors team at IMA House included Dr. Rakhi Nagarshekhar-Dentist, Dr. Chaya Bandodkarkar Dr.Laxmikant Naik-ENT, Dr. Rajan Pilgaon & Dr. Santosh Naik-General surgeon, Dr. Ajay Pednekar-General Physician, Dr. Smita Usgaonkar – Physician, Dr. Lallana Bakhale -General Physician, Dr. Samidha Khandeparkar-Pathologist.

Doctors at Kamat Hospital included Dr. Sarvesh Dubhashi-Radiologist, Gynaecologists-Dr. Jayant Kamat, Dr. Abhijit Kamat, Dr. Rewa Dubhashi, Gyneac did PAP Smear and pelvic ultrasonography wherever indicated.

During the camp the patients were registered, BP, Height & Weight recorded and referred for blood test, patient history taken and checked by General Physicians and then referred for Oncology, ENT and Gynaecological Consultations, Dentistry ,Sono mammography and PAP Smear and ultrasound. Needy cases were referred for pelvic ultrasonography

Total 49 women patients were examined in the camp

7) Margaon 8th March 2017-The GOA CANCER SOCIETY in association with IMA Margao Branch and KALAGHAR, Margao

Organised a free Cancer Detection Camp on Wednesday, 8th March 2017 at Nagesh Garden, Marlem Borda from 9.00 am to 12 pm.

Dr. Sandeep Prabhudessai-KALAGHAR Margao welcomed the dignitaries on the dias. The Camp was inaugurated by Dr.Babita Prabhudesai-Chairperson Margao Munucipalty, Sangeeta Chawan-Administrative Officer of Goa Cancer Scciety, Dr. Kalpana Chodankar Secretary IMA State, Dr. Suraj Prabhudessai -President IMA Margao and Pratibha Lctilika

Dr. Babita Prabhudesai spoke about women empowerment.

8) Porvorim 19th March 2017-The GOA CANCER SOCIETY in association with IMA BARDEZ and RG Hospital, Porvorim

Under the guidance of Dr. Mahesh Naik-Managing Committee Member, Goa Cancer Society organised a free Cancer Detection Camp on Sunday 19th March 2017 from 9.00 to 2 pm RG Hospital, Porvorim.

Dr. Mahesh Naik, Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Goa welcomed the dignitaries on the dias, Doctors and patients who attended the camp. The Camp was inaugurated by Dr. Suresh Shetye -Vice-President, Goa Cancer Society, Shri. Gangaram Morajkar, Managing Committee Member of the Goa Cancer Society, Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Jt.Secretary of the Goa Cancer Society, at Manipal Hospital, Goa, Dr. Medha Salkar ~President, IMA Goa State, Dr. Gurupreet Singh Gill Senior Urologist-RG Hospital, Porvorim Mr.Puneet Vig-General Manager, RG Hospital, Porvorim, Dr. Dheeraj Lambor -Secretary, IMA Bardez

Dr. Suresh B. Shetye stated in his address that The Goa Cancer Society was established hi 1968 as an independent charity and registered in 1969 under the Societies Registration Act. Itis a voluntary non-profit organization, dedicated to service, education and treatment towards fulfilling in the commitments in the worldwide fight against cancer.

Late Shri. Dayanand. B. Bandodkar was the Founder Chairman of the Goa Cancer Society Inauguration of the Goa Cancer Society’s Hospital at Dona Paula was done in 1977. Due to Financial difficulties, Bank loans and not much support from the Government it became very difficult to run the Hospital.

In 1992 the Society collaborated with Manipal Education Trust to run the Hospital. Today the Society is in the position to conduct various activities for the cause of Cancer.

The Goa Cancer Society has signed Agreement with IMA Ponda Charitabie Trust on 12th May 2016 to associate with DILASA – Centre for Terminally ill, where Donation of Rupees Ten Lakhs is made against sponsor for Two rooms with the capacity of 5 beds ,he further added that the Society now has done 8 Cancer Detection Camps moreover the Society is organising Cancer Talks and also helping the needy cancer patients financially in collaboration with Manipal Hospital Goa .

The Doctors team included Dr. Sitaram Korgaonkar & Dr. Pradeep Korgaonkar-General Physician, Dr. Sachin Narvekar-Gynacologist, Pr. Dheeraj Lambor-ENT Surgeon, Dr. Vardan Bhobe-Surgeon, Dr. Gurupreet Singh Gill-Serior Urologist, RG Hospital, Dr. Mahesh Naik-Surgeon.

During the camp the patients were registered, BP, Height & Weight recorded and referred for blood test, patient history taken and checked by General Physicians and then referred for Oncology, ENT and Gynaecological Consultations, Breast examination and ultrasound.

Total 64 patients were examined in the camp, out of which 2 cancer cases are detected, one of Breast Cancer and other Leukaemia.

9) IMA Ponda Charitable Trust has constructed DILASA – A Palliative Care Centre for providing End of Life Care in terms of Palliative Medicine & Pain Management.

This Centre will be operational in few months time,

Press Conference at Farmagudi, Ponda DILASA site on 25th Mar 2017.

In order to create awareness in the community and sensitize Doctors, Nurse, Paramedics and people at large site visit at Farmagudi was organized on Friday 24th March 2017. A Press Conference was held at DILASA which was addressed by IMA Ponda Charitable – Trustees Board Members – The Goa Cancer Society and IMA Goa State.

Dr. Narayan Usgaonkar, Chairman and Dr. Vallabh Dhaimodker Secretary Trust, Dr, Suresh. B Shetye – Vice President, Dr. Damodar Bhounsule, Secretary and Dr. Shekhar Salkan, Joined Secretary – The Goa Cancer Society addressed the Press Media regarding the project, functioning of DILASA, role of The Goa Cancer Society and running of the institution. A site visit made the people present aware regarding DILASA project.

10)  25th March 2017: Workshop cum Training program

at District Hospital was inaugurated by Adv. Narendra Sawaikar, Hon. MP South Goa and released the Bulletin edited by Dr. Sitakant Ghanekar. Dr. Nutan Dev, Health Officer District Hospital Ponda, Dr. Kalpana Chodankar, Secretary-IMA Goa State, Sangeeta Chawan-Administrative Officer, Goa Cancer Society was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Narayan Usgaonkar, Dr. Vallabh Dhaimodker, Dr. Ajay Pednekar, Dr. Sandeep Naik and Dr. Sarvesh Dubhashi deliberated on the occasion.

Nearly 75 delegates from nursing institutions, Government & Privates hospitals, Home Nursing School, Social Organizations and individually participated in a day long workshop. Dr Ajay Pednekar was Master of Ceremony and Dr Sitakant Ghanekar was Officer of the Day.

Dr. Linge Gowda gave talk on Principles of Palliative Care & Opioid Therapy and Principles of administration.

Dr. Geeta Joshi gave talk on Pain – assessment and treatment.

Dr. Priyadarshini Kulkarni gave talk on importance of Symptoms Management & Roles of nurses in Hospice and Home Care.

11) 26th March 2017

CME Program at Hotel Fidalgo was inaugurated at the hands of Shri. Siddhartha Kunkolienkar MLA, Fanaji Constituency who was the Chief Guest, Dr. Pradeep Naik, Dean, Goa Medical College was Guest of Honor.Dr Ajay Pednekar, welcomed the gathering, Dr Santosh Usgaonkar briefed regarding DILASA project . Dr Pradeep Naik in his address appreciated the eftorts of IMA Ponda and complimented Dr.Medha Salkar-Fresident, IMA Goa state also appreciated and congratulated IMA Ponda.

Shri Shrinivas V.Dempe, President The Gea Cancer Society and Chairman, Dempo Group expressed satisfaction over The Goa Cancer Society – IMA Ponda Charitable Trust relationship and signing of Agreement to carry forward DILASA activities jointly. Shri Dempo has shown his willingness to associate Dempo Group with Dilasa. Dr-Sarvesh Dubhashi, Treasurer, IMA Ponda proposed vote of Thanks. Dr Dhaimodker was Master of Ceremony and Dr Sandeep Naik and Dr Sarvesh Dubhashi were Officers of the Day .

12) Meeting of Managing Committee Members of Goa Cancer Society with Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi

Professor and Head & Neck Surgeon at Tata Memorial the Hospital – the main speaker at CME on Sunday 9 April 2017 @ 9 am at Hotel Fidalgo. The IMA Goa State Office bearers attended the meeting mainly Dr. Medha Salkar President, Dr. Kalpana Chodankar, Secretary Committee, Dr. Kartavi Mashelkar Treasurer of IMA Croastaile along with the Managing Committee of Goa Cancer Society i.e Dr. Suresh Shetye – Vice-President,  Dr. Damodar Bhounsule – Secetary, Shri Gangaram Morajkar – Managing Committee Member, Dr. Shekhar Salkar Jt. Seceretary, Discussion on review on various projects of Goa Cancer society with IMA was made.

13) CME on Sunday 9th March 2017

CME Program at Hotel Fidalgo was organized on the topic of  “Treatment of Smoking Induced Cancer of Head and Neck”. Dr. Suresh Shetye-Vice-President, Dr. Kalpana Chodankar-Secretary, IMA Goa State, Dr. Kartavi Mashelkar, Treasurer IMA Goa state. Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Jt. Secretary, Goa Cancer Society, Dr. Damodar Bhounsule, Secretary, Goa Cancer Society Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi Professor Head & Neck Cancer Surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital delivered a lecture on the topic “Treatment of Smoking Induced Cancer of Head and Neck”. Goa Cancer Society sponsored Rs.75,000/-

14) Financial Assistance with Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula

Under the Financial assistance scheme, The people who had completed 5 years in Goa and having annual income not more than Rs. 5,00,000/- and suffering from some type cf cancer are eligible to apply to the President of the The Goa Cancer Society in a prescribed form

The financial assistance form includes

  • Form A-Medical Certificate by Head of Cepartment of Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospitals, Goa and Chief of Clinical Services, Manipal Hospitals, Goa.
  • Form B-Income certificate(not exceeding Rs. 5,00,000/-) and residential certificate in original
  • Form C– application to the President of The Goa Cancer Society by the Patient.
  • Form D– application to the President of The Goa Cancer Society (in case the patient is minor) by the Parent/Guardian.
  • Form E– undertaking given to the Hospital by the President of The Goa Cancer Society

The Medical Committee after having detail analysis of the patients file and income certificate will suggest the amount to be sanctioned

Financial aid given till date is (2016-17)
Under the financial assistance Scheme in the financial year till now 35 patients are given Fiancial assistance suffering from different types of cancer amounting to Rs.15,00 000/-. Where  Manipal Hospital contributes 50% of the treatment expenditure of the patient.
