The following are the activities undertaken for the year 2015-16

1. Cancer Detection Camp at Curchorem Kakoda on 18.1.15

The Goa Cancer Society in association with Manipal Hospitals Goa, Lions Club of Quepem, Curchorem & Sanguem, IMA Goa State, GOKARMA Oncology Association’, and Curchorem-Kakoda Community Health Centre,organised  a Cancer Detection Camp from 8.30 am to 1 pm on 18th January 2015, at Curchorem-Kakoda Community Health Centre for the first 100 patients who are 40 years and above and who have been identified as symptomatic patients

The medical team included  Dr Shekhar Salkar-Head of Oncology Department & Chief of Clinical Services at Manipal Hospitals Goa., Others doctors from Manipal Hospital  included Dr. Shubha Jyoti -Radiation Oncology, Dr. Arati Fernandes – Consultant Radiology Dept. Dr. Ramesh Bhonsle- Dental Surgeon, Dr. Gaurish Pallav-TB& Chest, RMO – Dr. Balakrishna Kanekar, Dr. Alita Asavedo, Dr. Vijaya Vernekar, Dr. Shweta Aiyaa The IMA Team comprised of Dr Jorson P  Fernandes – ENT Consultant, Dr. Vinayak Bhuvaji (Gynaecologist and Obstetrician), Dr. Pradnya Kakodkar – General Medicine.

During the camp the patients were registered, BP & Weight recorded, patient history taken and checked by RMO’ and then referred for Oncology, Dental, ENT and Gynaecological Consultations. Needy cases were referred for blood, urine tests and Ultra Sound.

The Doctors checked 106 patients.

2. Cancer Detection Camp at Chorao on 31.5.2015

The Cancer Detection Camp was held on 31st May 2015 at Dayanand Education Society High School, Chorao from 8.30 am to 2 pm.

The Goa Cancer Society organised this camp in association with Manipal Hospitals Goa, Gokarma Oncology Association, IMA Goa State and Sub Health Centre Chorao(Bicholim PHC)

The doctors team included Dr Shekhar Salkar – Chief of Clinical Services at Manipal Hospitals Goa, Dr Kaustubh Patnekar – Gynaec Consultant at MHG, Dr Ramesh Bhounsule – Dental Surgeon –  MHG, Dr Sandeep Sansgiri – ENT Consultant-MHG,  Dr. Vikram – RMO – Surgery – MHG, Dr Amey Prabhua – RMO MHG, Dr. Vijaya – RMO.

During the camp the patients were registered, BP & Weight recorded, patient history taken and checked by RMO’ and then referred for Oncology, Dental, ENT and Gynaecological Consultations. Needy cases were referred for blood tests .

Due to unrest in the Village Gram sabha Meeting  at Chorao the same day only 34 patients attended the camp.

3. Second  Annual Lecture on 31th Oct 2015.

Second Annual Lecture of the Goa Cancer Society was organised on 31th Oct 2015, at Hotel Fidalgo, Panaji at 5 pm on the topic “Breast Cancer” by Dr. Mandar Nadkarni, MS DNB, Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology, Consultant Breast and Colorectal Surgeon at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute, Mumbai.

The Refreshments were given to all the visitors which included tea, coffee and biscuits. The audience were pretty much  enjoying a musical selfie video stressing on self breast examination.

The President of the Society Shri .Shrinivas Dempo  escorted the guest to the dais  and presented a flower bouquet to the guest  . The dignitaries on the dias included Dr. Mandar Nadkarni,guest speaker, Shri Shrinivas Dempo, President, Dr. Suresh Shetye, Vice – President, Dr. Damodar Bhounsule, Secretary  and Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Jt. Secretary of the Society. The programme was then inaugurated by  lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries and other Managing Committee Members of the Society.

Welcome address was delivered by the President  where he he gave brief description of activities done by the society this year and  he further added that he was very happy to inform that there was a time when Society was going through financial crises but now we have sufficient funds to accomplish our aims and objectives, the President then gave a brief introduction of  Dr. Mandar Nadkarni. The guest  was then felicitated with a silver plaque by the Presisent of the Society, Mr. Shrinivas Dempo .

Dr. Mandar Nadkarni, the renowned oncologist delivered a informative lecture on cancer  through a PowerPoint Presentation  explaining in detail in a full packed Hall at Fidalgo Hotel

 He said that the healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of any form of cancer ,if there is a family history of breast cancer it does not necessarily  pass on to future generations .In general case the risk of breast cancer I about 1 in 16, which doubles to 2 in 16 persons in case of family history. This means 88 percent still don’t get breast cancer though any of their family member had suffered. He stresses on research that found older women are at higher risk of breast cancer than younger women. Even as he advised them to follow the World Health Organisation guidelines on carrying out regular breast self examination  after the age of 20 years. Women beyond 40 years of age were advised to undergo a mammography examination at once every year.

After the lecture their  was a question answer session for the audience, many thoughtful questions came which were answered by Dr. Shekhar Salkar and Dr. Mandar Nadkarni.

The lecture ended with a hearty vote of thanks by Dr. Shekhar Salkar.

4. Multispeciality Camp held on 26.01.2016 at Govt High School, Kalay, Sanguem.

The Goa Cancer Society in association with Manipal Hospitals Goa, Lions Club of Quepem, Curchorem & Sanguem, IMA Goa State, GOKARMA Oncology Association’, and IMA-CQS, organised  a Cancer Detection Camp from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm on 26th January 2016,  at Govt High School, Kalay, Sanguem who are 40 years and above and who have been identified as symptomatic patients.

This Camp was inaugurated by Chief Guest  Shri. Subhash  Phal  Dessai ,MLA Sanguem in the presence of dignitaries ,Shri Gangaram Morajkar, Managing Commiittee Member, Goa Cancer Society, Dr. Shekhar Salkar – Chief of Clinical Services & Chief of Department of Oncology at Manipal Hospitals Goa. Shri. Vilas R Dessai President of Lions Club of Quepem, Curchorem & Sanguem  & CQS Doctors.

During the camp, the patients who are above 40 years of age, and who are having symptoms of cancer were seen  by the expert Consultants from the Faculty of Surgical Oncology, Surgery, Dentistry of Manipal Hospitals Goa  Opthamology, Blood test was also carried out.

The medical team included  Dr Shekhar Salkar-Head of Oncology Department & Chief of Clinical Services at Manipal Hospitals Goa., Others doctors from Manipal Hospital  included Dr. Shubha Jyoti -Radiation Oncology, Dr. Ramesh Bhonsle- Dental Surgeon, RMO – Dr. Patil, Dr. Soniya, Dr. Shruti & Gynaec Dr. Medha Salkar.

During the camp the patients were registered, BP & Weight recorded, patient history taken and checked by RMO’ and then referred for Oncology, Dental and Consultations. Needy cases were referred for opthamology, blood, urine test and BP pulse check.

The Doctors checked 250 patients out of which  no cases have been identified as suspected cancer patients.

5. Financial Assistance to the Needy Cancer patients.

Under the Financial assistance scheme, The people who had completed 5 years in Goa and having annual income not more than Rs.1,50,000/- and suffering from some type of cancer are eligible to apply to the President of the The Goa Cancer Society  in a prescribed form

The financial assistance form includes

  • Form A  – Medical Certificate by Head of Department of Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospitals, Goa and Chief of Clinical Services, Manipal Hospitals, Goa
  • Form B – Income certificate(not exceeding Rs. 1,50,000/-) and residential certificate in original
  • Form C – application to the President of The Goa Cancer Society by the Patient.
  • Form D – application to the President of The Goa Cancer Society (in case the patient is minor) by the Parent/Guardian.
  • Form E – undertaking given to the Hospital by the President of The Goa Cancer Society

The Medical Committee after having detail analysis of the patients file and income certificate suggests the amount to be sanctioned.

Under the financial assistance Scheme till now 12 patients are given Fiancial assistance suffering from different types of cancer amounting to Rs.2,31,000/-
